The Sticky Details
We finished up our gummi bear lab today and calculated the change in volumes from beginning to ending points. Once completed, the students were to write a conclusion using the proper format and graph their results. The instructions for graphing are below. Conclusion instructions are on a previous post.

Density, Oh Density.....
Seeing The Relationship Between Mass and Volume
Today we performed our lab based on the procedures the students wrote yesterday over the question "How does the volume of the wood affect density?" Once complete, the students were to write a conclusion based on their data. We will graph the data and discuss the results tomorrow in class! Fun times in science class.
Thanks to all who have donated Gummi Bears....with luck they will become science experiments on Friday!! If not, then on Monday!

Conclusion Quiz Today!
Quiz Over Conclusion Writing
We took a quiz over how to interpret data and write a conclusion properly. Students are expected to "master" this concept by scoring a 25 or greater out of 28 on the quiz. If they don't master the quiz, they will take it again until they do. Conclusion writing is on the MSP test this spring. After the quiz, we worked on calculating mass of various objects in the classroom and gaining some perspective on what a gram really is.
Have a great weekend and if you can bring in gummy bears next week for a lab, that'd be great!

Volume: Regular Shaped Objects
Conclusion homework was due today and we discussed the rubric that will be used on their conclusion quiz on Friday. It is posted below as well. We reviewed and/or learned about measuring volume of regular shaped objects using the metric system. We went over a powerpoint first and had "guided notes" for the student's reference. After that, students were partnered up and measured various rectangular prisms in the classroom. For homework, students were assigned a worksheet.

Basic Unit: Meter
We reviewed the metric system of measuring distance, the meter. We compared is to customary measurement in order to gain some perspective about the two forms of measurement. We went over the following powerpoint with our "guided notes" first. Metric: Length Powerpoint Once completed, for practice we measured a few different things around the school using metric and then converted them to a different metric unit using the ladder method.

We also had homework practicing conversions. It would be best to use the ladder method.(see Friday's post) Along with this practice, there is a conclusion to write as well.

Experimental Variables/Conclusion Writing
We reviewed how to write a conclusion. There is a format that the students will need to use each time. We will be having a quiz on conclusion writing next week! Students will be expected to take/retake the quiz until they receive an A on it! Mastery of the concept is a necessity. For class today, we wrote a conclusion together and then I gave them a paper on How to Write a Conclusion. Homework was assigned on conclusion writing. A copy of it is below. We also worked on experimental variables. If not completed in class, it is homework as well.
