Calculating Volume Using Displacement


We watched the above video and then applied what we learned to a lab in which students were to calculate the volume of various irregular shaped objects using a graduated cylinder.  The objects included: 5 marbles, 10 pennies, 2 crayons, 4 dice.  Once complete, they were to answer questions based on the lab.  There was homework assigned and it is located below for those that may need it.

Mystery Canisters

Alright, so once we figured out what the above picture was of, we actually did an activity called mystery canisters.  The activity allowed students to alter the contents of their film canisters and make them sink, float and suspend.  From the activity, they should see the relationship between mass and volume as well as density and it's role as far as buoyancy.  Fun times in science class!

Gummi Bear Lab....1st day





The gummi's volume was calculated, they were tagged and tossed into the glasses of water.  Now, we wait for our results.  Tomorrow we will calculate their volumes again and the difference between the beginning and ending volumes.

Investigative Lab



Today we wrote up our investigative plan to test the question: "How does the volume of the wood affect it's density?"  Students were to write their hypothesis about what they think would happen, identify variables and write a procedure on how to test the question.  Once complete, if time allowed, they began the lab.

Density Activity

Density Activity


Today in class, we worked on calculating density of various regular shaped objects made of wood.  Students were to calculate the volume and mass.  From those two measurements, they would be able to calculate mass. 

Once done completing the densities, students are to order the densities from smallest to largest.(math skills)  The worksheet is below, although all the wood is in my classroom!

Volume of Cylinders Review



Volume of a cylinder is pi x radius squared x height.  Just reviewed that in class and had it for homework if students didn't finish.  We also had a conclusion to write for homework.  Students will be scoring each others to gain a better understanding of what is expected of them.  A scoring rubric was posted on the blog the other day.

Volume: Regular Shaped Objects


Conclusion homework was due today and we discussed the rubric that will be used on their conclusion quiz on Friday.  It is posted below as well.  We reviewed and/or learned about measuring volume of regular shaped objects using the metric system.  We went over a powerpoint first and had "guided notes" for the student's reference.  After that, students were partnered up and measured various rectangular prisms in the classroom.  For homework, students were assigned a worksheet.
